Color Accessibility: Designing for Everyone
Approximately 8 percent of men and 0.5 percent of women have some form of color vision deficiency, most commonly difficulty distinguishing red from green. To design accessibly, never rely on color alone to convey information. Always pair color with text labels, patterns, or icons. Ensure text meets WCAG contrast ratios: at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text against its background. Use tools like WebAIM Contrast Checker to verify your combinations. Avoid red-green combinations for status indicators; use green-red with shapes or labels instead. Test your designs with color blindness simulators available in browser dev tools. High contrast mode should remain functional. Designing for accessibility improves the experience for all users, not just those with vision deficiencies.
